The innards of L.H.O.
by Albertine Meunier

The Innards of L.H.O. book, or Google’s undeniable lack of art culture!

In the artwork The Innards of L.H.O., Albertine Meunier hijacks the little box that appears next to Google search results.
Through this artistic gesture, she decides that Marcel Duchamp’s L.H.O.O.Q. dates to the period of Net Art, rather than Dada, as art history would describe it.

As such, she produces a sort of Readymade Hack on a piece that is itself a Readymade.
In fact, the first hack consisted of Marcel Duchamp adding a mustache to the Mona Lisa, transforming Leonardo da Vinci’s original artwork with a simple gesture. In turn, Albertine adds the Net Art label to Google’s search results for Duchamp’s L.H.O.O.Q. by directly modifying the information in Google’s Knowledge Graph.

Albertine exposes how fragile our access to knowledge is through Google by revealing the underbelly of its Knowledge Graph.

This performance has been online since July 27, 2013. During this time, no correction has been made by the great player in the culture field, our good friend Google.
Should we see into this negligence undeniable evidence of Google’s lack of art culture, despite its flaunted expertise with the Google Art Project?

"Neglecting" in this way, and for several months now, the greatest icon of 20th century art history that is Marcel Duchamp’s L.H.O.O.Q., as well as neglecting all the other Readymades that are Fountain, Bicycle Wheel and Bottle Rack, is very Dada of them!

In order to document and chronicle this online performance
> Albertine certified the performance by recording the modification online: L.H.O.O.Q. is Net Art – recording of the artwork by Antoine Chéron, lawyer at ACBM law firm.
This recording certifies the veracity of this performance, in which the content was indeed modified and directly visible online.

> Albertine sollicited the eloquent words of Annick Rivoire, journalist, critic and founder of Poptronics.fr, and Etienne Gatti, art critic and exhibition curator, for the book The Innards of L.H.O.
Their texts both comment on the performance and put into perspective the hacking of Google’s Knowledge Graph.

This 24-page mini book (11 x 16 cm) includes texts by Annick Rivoire and Etienne Gatti, accompanied by visuals documenting the online changes made to the Knowledge Graph.
